August 10, 2022. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) – Region 2 and Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) – Region 2 spearheads the regional launching of the Pinas: Basura Buster (PBB) Mascot and Basura Buster Mobile Game app during the Region 2 Ecological Solid Waste Management Advocacy Launching held on August 10, 2022 at Robinson’s Place Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.
DENR-2 Regional Executive Director, Gwendolyn C. Bambalan, DENR Strategic Communication and Initiatives Service (SCIS) Director Khalil Sergio Bayam duly represented by Ms. Adona San Diego, DENR Environmental Management Bureau – 2 Regional Director, Nelson P. Honrado, and Mines and Geosciences Bureau – 2 Regional Director Mario A. Ancheta and DILG Regional 2 – Regional Director Jonathan Paul M. Leusen, Jr. heads the regional launching of the PBB Mascot and Basura Buster Mobile Game App.
Director Khalil Sergio Bayam expressed his utmost gratitude to the LGUs in Region 2 through a video message for their cooperation and support to the programs of the DENR on solid waste management.
RED Bambalan urged the active commitment and partnership of private individuals, LGUs, industry owners and other stakeholders to support solid waste management.
Regional Director Honrado in his opening message said that the positive response of the attendees implies their commitment to be part of the solid waste management advocacy campaign.
Pinas: The Basura Buster (PBB) is DENR’s solid waste management mascot and is the image of the SWM program of the DENR, which will enlist the support of the youth. PBB entertained the participants with a lively dance number together with the EMB- 02 Environmental Monitoring Officers (EnMOs). PBB also danced to DENR’s solid waste management advocacy song “Kung Walang Aksaya, Masaya.”
To further strengthen awareness on solid waste management in this digital age, the DENR developed the Basura Buster mobile game, which is an Android based mobile gaming application designed for kids 5 to 8 years old to teach them proper waste segregation in a fun way. The gaming app is one of the projects under the campaign, and the public can access the mobile app by downloading it for free from the Google Play Store.
Forester Geronimo Cabaccan represented Isabela Governor and Forester Robert Adap represented Cagayan Governor, Mannuel N. Mamba. More or less 200 participants attended the launching to include PENROs and CENROs, PEMOs of region 2 from LGUs, national government agencies, academe and local media practitioners. Seedlings, polo shirts featuring PBB and information, education and communication materials were given to the attendees.
Barangay Nagassican Santiago City, won first prize in the Search for Barangay Basura Buster: A video-making contest featuring the best practices of barangays in solid waste management. They also bagged the special award for Best MRF. Meanwhile, Barangay Aridowen, Sta. Teresita, Cagayan and Barangay San Pedro, Maddela, Quirino got first and second runner-up, respectively.
