EMB Region 2 welcomes the research team from the University of the Philippines Diliman-Institute of Biology (UPD-IB) spearheaded by Francis S. Magbanua, PhD for the project, “Development of the Philippine Biotic Index (PBI) to Monitor Water Quality of Wadable Streams”. The PBI three-year period project in partnership with the Environmental Management Bureau is being funded by the Department of Science and Technology-National Research Council of the Philippines. Said project aims to assess and monitor stream health in the Philippines.
The PBI will play a significant role in the protection of the environment by providing additional tools for environmental monitoring. PBI will also complement the existing water guidelines by providing additional biological monitoring parameters for a more comprehensive assessment of water bodies.
The Team is on its initial activities such as coordination with the concerned entities and reconnaissance survey to establish the project’s sampling points at the 12 identified rivers in Region 2. The collection of water and macroinvertebrate samples, analysis of fecal coliform among others is scheduled for 2022. The research team includes Jacqueline E. Hilario, Ronel M. Danila, and Ashemir B. Velasco, UP Diliman; Jennifer Azenet and Edwin Nelmida, Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (DENR-ERDB); Ma. Christi B. Nacido and Eunice DC. Bognot, National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DA-NFRDI); Lei Ester B. Gabo, Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB); Louise Veronica D. Jose, EMB Central Office; Romualdo M. Pol, Mario Carandang and Jasper Paul Ancheta, Bureau Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR Central Office); Apple Joy Usquisa, Kathleen Ela Bugarin and Wilfredo Petiuluna, BFAR RO2, and Myrna T. Ramos, Isabela State University Cabagan Campus.
During the meeting, today, 16 November 2021, EMB Regional Director Nelson Honrado expressed his support for the project and looks forward to working closely with the Team.
Also in attendance were Engr. Florentino T. Lingan, Jr. Chief, Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Division; Almira A. Maguigad, Chief, Environmental Laboratory and Jailane R. Siriban, Sr. Management Specialist as regional coordinator assigned for the said project.
